DGG
DGG 3kV Distribution Type Surge Arresters are intended for electrical systems where transient overvoltage protection is required for compatible distribution equipment.
Lightning impulses, system switching operations and other transient disturbances can introduce temporary high-voltage stresses into electrical networks. When these stresses exceed the insulation capability of equipment, insulation deterioration or electrical failure may occur.
Metal oxide surge arresters are used as part of the system's insulation coordination strategy to limit these transient overvoltages.
The arrester uses the nonlinear voltage-current characteristics of metal oxide varistor elements. Under normal operating conditions, the elements maintain a high-resistance state. During an overvoltage event, their resistance decreases significantly, allowing surge current to flow and limiting the voltage across the arrester terminals.
The 3kV distribution type is distinguished by its voltage-class application and corresponding insulation coordination requirements. Selection should not be based on the 3kV designation alone, because different models within the series can have different rated voltages, continuous operating voltages and protective characteristics.
DGG provides model-based selection support for distribution projects, helping customers compare electrical parameters, terminal arrangements and installation requirements before ordering.
Designed for compatible 3kV-class distribution applications requiring protection against transient overvoltages.
Uses the nonlinear electrical characteristics of metal oxide elements to limit surge voltage.
The ribbed external housing provides an insulating structure in a compact product form.
Helps limit voltage stress associated with lightning impulses and switching transients.
Threaded metal terminals are provided at both ends for electrical connection according to the installation design.
Can be selected in coordination with the insulation withstand level of the protected electrical equipment.
Rated voltage, continuous operating voltage and protective characteristics are determined by the selected arrester model.
Electrical ratings and mechanical requirements can be reviewed against the project specification.
A metal oxide surge arrester uses nonlinear resistive elements to control transient overvoltages.
During normal operation, the arrester presents relatively high resistance at the applied system voltage, allowing only a small leakage current.
When a lightning impulse or switching surge occurs, the nonlinear resistance decreases rapidly, enabling surge current to pass through the arrester and limiting the voltage appearing across its terminals.
As the transient overvoltage subsides, the arrester returns toward its normal high-resistance operating condition.
The protective performance depends on the arrester's rated voltage, continuous operating voltage, residual voltage and energy-handling capability, as well as the electrical characteristics of the protected system.
Depending on the selected ratings and protection design, this series may be used for:
3kV-class electrical distribution systems
Distribution transformer overvoltage protection
Industrial electrical distribution equipment
Electrical switching equipment protection
Instrument transformer protection
Power distribution panels and associated equipment
Distribution substations with compatible voltage requirements
Electrical equipment insulation coordination
Industrial utility power systems
Electrical distribution renovation projects
The external structure consists of:
Ribbed insulating housing
Upper threaded metal terminal
Lower threaded metal terminal
Metal end fittings
External insulating sheds
Internal protective components, subject to the model's construction
The exact housing material, internal configuration and mounting accessories should be verified from the technical drawing.
Identify the nominal system voltage, maximum operating voltage and grounding arrangement.
Select the arrester rated voltage (Ur) and continuous operating voltage (Uc) according to the system's operating and temporary overvoltage conditions.
Compare the arrester's residual voltage with the insulation withstand level of the protected equipment.
Confirm the required discharge current, energy-handling capability and relevant surge conditions.
Consider indoor or outdoor installation, pollution conditions, altitude, terminal connections and mounting requirements.
Verify the applicable standards, model specifications and availability of type-test documentation before procurement.
A 3kV distribution type surge arrester is intended for compatible distribution applications requiring protection against lightning and switching overvoltages. The selected model must match the electrical characteristics of the system and protected equipment.
Not necessarily. Arrester selection depends on the system's maximum operating voltage, grounding conditions, temporary overvoltage requirements and insulation coordination. The nominal voltage alone is not sufficient for selection.
Ur is the arrester's rated voltage, while Uc is its continuous operating voltage. Both values are important for selecting an arrester suitable for the electrical system.
It may be used for compatible transformer protection applications, provided the selected model's voltage rating, protective level and installation requirements match the transformer system.
Please provide system voltage, grounding arrangement, required Ur and Uc, discharge-current requirements, installation conditions and any applicable project specification.
Please specify the exact arrester model and required documentation. Availability of type-test reports and other technical documents should be confirmed for the selected model.
Customers may submit their electrical specifications, installation drawings and documentation requirements for configuration review.
Need a 3kV Surge Arrester for Your Distribution Project?
Choosing a metal oxide surge arrester requires more than matching a nominal voltage. Continuous operating voltage, residual voltage, grounding arrangement and insulation coordination all influence the appropriate model selection.
